Runes and Chests

General info about Runes

Rune system is one of important Allods Online features. Runes make chars stronger by lowering incoming damage and raising outgoing one. Creating highlevel Runes takes time and money (both ingame and in so-called “real world” ;) ).

Runes can be found in high-quality items (green-quality and higher) and extracted from them. As far as I know it’s the only source of Runes in the game. Extracted Runes can be traded, combined and put into chars’ gear and chests. After completing lvl 15 quest all Runes of the specific type (you will be told after completing this quest which type is yours) give damage bonuses if put into weapons and defence bonuses if put into armor. That’s simple. You can read more detailed info about basics of Runes system in Novograd Times. But the Chests… Putting Runes in Chests is another matter. In that case Runes raise probability that the chest will contain specific type of item.

How it works – 1

Let’s say you’re a Summoner. You wear cloth only and feel that you are in desperate need of better gear. How you can use Runes&Chest system to get it? Just take the chest (check Treasure Hunter’s Guide for cheap and easy way to find one) and put Gold Rune into it. Now your chances to acquire cloth item from the Chest are 3 to 1. Besides doing daily chest quests, one can get chests as a random drop from Allods mobs or buy them from ingame real-currency shop.

Runes’ effects

What about other Runes effects on Chests? Ohar, one of Russian beta-testers, made a great job by experimenting on 647 chests in order to figure out different Rune effects. The tables in the end of this guide are based on his results. We’ve just translated it and changed format to more convienient one. Now, a few words about how to use it.

Find an item type you want to get in rows. First three rows are for different armor types, then four weapon types go, then shields, trinkets and wands. “Other” category includes rings, necklaces, cloaks and earrings. Then look at the cells in this row – you’ll see drop chances associated with each Rune. If the cell is empty it means zero probability. Choose one or two Rune types with highest probabilities to get the desired item. The only thing left is to find the Rune ingame, insert it to your chest and pray for luck :)

How it works – 2

Let’s continue with our Summoner example. Many types of Runes added to chests give some chance of cloth drop: Gold, Iron, Copper, Phosphorus, Brimstone, Chrome, Arsenic and Quicksilver. But the highest probability is associated with Gold. So it’s wise for our Summoner to store all Gold Runes from quest items and drops in his Bank to use them later with the chests. Let’s say he also wants to obtain better wand. Oops, bad news! Wands drop rate is very low but it seems that Quicksilver Runes give better chances than other ones. Hm, may be he should store Quicksilver Runes as well? Let’s have a look on the other drop associated with Quicksilver Runes… It seems that we have about 26% chance to get useless item (1% Plate, 23% Leather, 1% Duals and 1% Shields) and the remaining 74% may bring us something useful.

Got at wand from a chest with Ferr rune twice now … yes this sadly seems outdated.

  2. admin says:

It’s possible that this info is outdated. Guide is based on CBT experiments. But developers never mentioned any changes in Runes&Chests system in patchnotes so we have every reason to believe that there were no major changes in drop chance ratios.

    This guide is outdated

Got a plate helmet from Lex rune using mithril chest.

  5. Sune says:

So, on average there are 53 runes of each type used in this test. Any chance of getting the exact number of runes used for each type? Would be helpful to calculate error bars on the numbers given, as I suspect they are quite huge in some cases.

  6. Anon says:

There’s also a difference in equipment stats for different runes. Personal experience implies Iron gives you magic-stat leathers while Phosphorous gives you physical-stat leathers. Perhaps the same relationship exists for Copper vs Brimstone on plate and Tin vs Lead on one-handed weapons

Thanks, Azar. We’ll try to )

And thank you for starting Novograd Times project and time&efforts you put into it. I enjoy reading it nearly as much as playing the game itself ;) Setting up AO daily newspaper is a great idea.
